February 2010 Meeting

ADA COUNTY WOOD WORKERS NEWSLETTER
February 10, 2010

The meeting called to order by President Mike Kingsley at 7:00 pm.

There were about 35 in attendance.

Treasurer Bob Middleton reported a balance of $560.

Diana Baird talked about the Presidential trees that were on the Capitol grounds and the book she has written about them. The book, directed at children, shows how the wood from the trees planted by Presidents of the US is being used for function and display in the remodeled Capitol building.

John Pickrell discussed the upcoming Artistry in Wood show at the Holiday Inn on Vista Ave on Feb 26 to 27. Reservations for the banquet have to be in by Feb 24. Items were requested for an auction. Contact Frank Lench at 939 3089 for reservations.

SHOW AND TELL

Chance Gatfield showed clocks he made of white cedar.


 

John Lee showed a box of maple and walnut.


 

PROGRAM

Jeff Watson and Brad McGee described the building of a bent wood chair. This was a school project for Brad with Jeff as a mentor. The project included everything from design, selection of materials and building jigs.

They built a streamer of PVC pipe set over a pot for boiling water. They had forms and a clamping system for bending the wood. The wood has to be steamed for the right time and handled quickly to get the correct bend.


The Artistry in Wood show at the Holiday Inn, Vista is Feb 26, 27 and 28. Items are to be entered between noon and 5:00pm Friday. The show is open to public on Saturday and Sunday (27 &28)The banquet is Saturday evening. Deadline for the banquet is Feb 24. The next meeting is March 10, 2010. The program will be on Finishing by Dave Evanich. He will cover stains, splats, blotches, cover-ups, fixes and final finishing. It may take an hour to cover everything and Dave has agreed to stay late if some want to ask some individual questions. It promises to be a program valuable to all.
