Woodcraft Demonstrations

Monte is still going to give demonstrations for the club.  Today will be gel stains.  Monte should be thanked for giving these demos which provide an opportunity to see what is going on with the store and how to use the items we buy here.

IAW Show Report

Micheal still has a few cars made for the Shriners that weren’t donated at Idaho Artistry In Wood.  The El Korah Shrine Temple will help with publicity next year.

We have received a substantial check from IAW.  One of the contributing factors for getting this money is club member support by entering items in the show, making items for the raffle, and auction items (banquet and silent).  The silent auction was a well received and the IAW has decided to continue with it.  One of the things mentioned was that we should enter more items, and that they should be reasonably priced ($60.00 - $100.00 range).  Please think about this during the next year if you're making something that might be good for the silent auction.  The show was a big hit, with better attendance than ever.

The IAW was almost audited and came close to not happening because of not knowing about some of the regulations involved.  In order to continue legally, the show would like all the clubs to be registered as non-profit corporations.  That way they have no problems listing where the money is going and we have a legal paper trail that can be followed.  Right now we do not really even exist and I’m pretty sure we are the only club that has not already done this.

New Business

Incorporation as a Non Profit

The club officers have had two meetings regarding how to get set up as a non-profit corporation or social club.  A proposed set of bylaws is now posted on the website for everyone to read ( http://acwoodworkers.com/ ).  Please review them and we will go over them at the next meeting.  A few copies are available for those without computers.  Assuming the club approves, we will proceed with the filing.  Monte has generously decided to give the clubs a permanent mail box in the store so we have a place to receive mail and use as an address for corporation filing.
A motion was made and seconded to proceed with incorporation as a non-profit.
After some discussion, the motion passed on a show of hands vote.

Additional Chairs for Meetings

A motion was made and seconded to authorize spending approximately $159.00 as the club’s share of 32 additional chairs for use at meetings at Woodcraft.  It passed on a show of hands vote.
The business meeting was adjourned at 7:31 PM.

Woodcraft Demo

Jeff Sater from Woodcraft gave a demonstration of General Finishes gel stains.  These stains are oil based, so wear gloves.  Clean up with mineral spirits.  Brush on with the grain or use a rag.  Wipe off excess when ready.  Dry overnight.  Repeat if not dark enough.  A water based top coat works when the stain is dry.

Show & Tell

Warren Shepherd showed a table saw sled and briefly talked about an air filtration system he made from a used furnace blower.  He also had some pictures of a corner curio cabinet made as a gift for his wife.

Brian Bass showed a bowl made from scroll sawn pieces.  The top was square which meant care was needed during turning to avoid the spinning corners.  Brian also showed another square box made using the scroll saw.  Sanding is a bigger challenge on square boxes than round ones that can be sanded on the lathe.

Regular raffle: three $15 Woodcraft gift cards, an extendable magnet, LED flashlight, Woodcraft promotional camp knife, veneer.
Class raffle: drawing will be next month

Bob Johnson gave a slide show with many slides on rain forest logging practices and some of the ecological problems caused by surging demand for tropical wood for lumber and pulp.  He also talked about land clearing practices to make land available for crops.
