Southwest Idaho Wood turners Association
Turning for the Troops
On November 3rd, under the leadership of Steve Young and support of Woodcraft for space, materials and lunch, the annual pen turning event turned 1340 pens which over the years has made over 10,000 pens to be donated to the troops overseas. The Twin Falls turners competed 250 of the 1340. Thanks to Twin Falls and all the members, family members and others who helped make the effort successful!
The Idaho food bank hosted their 15th annual Empty Soup Bowl event on Friday November 23 rd. The club members brought in a bunch of fine bowls to donate to the group.
Thanks to all who brought bowls and thanks to Lyn Trozer for taking the leadership for our club.
Kirk DeHeer conducted a three day class in October and it was received well by those who attended. This was the clubs first attempt at sponsoring a class with a professional out of state turner coming to our club and Woodcraft. We learned a lot about putting on an event like this and plan to do it again. With the clubs $500.00 contribution and the entry fees we ended up breaking even.
The new board of directors and advisory committee will review all results and make plans another event in 2013.
Segmented Turning with John Lee
John brought several examples of his work, and augmented them with segmented sections from which he constructs his pieces. He also showed the techniques used to form the sometimes tiny pieces that make up each layer.
Our club is very fortunate to have talent at the level John is at. We all know about his famous boxes and it was enjoyable to know he does more than just boxes. John was last years featured artist at the Artistry in Wood show and had a beautiful display of his work there.
Election of Officers
After John’s talk, election of 2013 officers was held. Ballots were collected from members and totaled, and results announced.
President Frank Lench
Trudy Webb, Susan McCoy and Brian Malnar were elected as the 2013 Board of Directors. The 2013 advisory committee for the upcoming year will be announced after the next board meeting.
**The annual Christmas Party, gift exchange and end of year celebration are on the 11th of December. Susan e-mailed out final details on Monday.
**It is also time to start thinking forward to the Artistry in Wood show in February. Turn that special project you have been planning-we have outstanding wood turners in the club, and this is your chance to shine!
Our next club meeting will be on January 8th. 2013 dues will start being collected at this meeting. We also will be attempting get our picture directory going again, so be ready for a quick picture snapshot at the meeting.
