Letters From the President

The Treasure Valley Woodturner's Club
Boise Idaho
March 6, 2012

Presidents Letter:

There are several important activities happening this month of March.

1. The club meeting is on the 13th at 6:30 pm at Woodcraft.

2. George Cochran, a new member and great turner will demo at this meeting.

3. John Pickerell will demo on Saturday the 17th at Woodcraft at 10:30 am

At this months meeting we will have an organized picture taking for the directory for 2012 paid up members. Please work with Ellis on this and make it simple.

The Woodcraft sponsored Mike Jackofsky seminar filled up with members and non-member turners and went off very well. Lots of solid instruction and turning ideas were presented and I have not heard any negative experiences from anyone. I would highly recommend his #1 straight tool with the scraper head. Of all the scrapers I've used for final shear and final thickness cuts, I believe this one is the best.

Several of the club members who attended will bring their class and after class pieces to show the club members on Tuesday evening. The following fine members spent their time and talents to assist our turning club at the IAW show and helped to make it a success. Thank You.

If I missed someone, please forgive me.

Congratulations to Jim Raeder for winning the IAW Best of Show for the second year with a great table lamp.

Dick Anderson from Pocatello came to the show with several special pieces and attended the seminar also.

I would also like to thank the novice and intermediate turners for the pieces they submitted. We have some very good turners in these divisions.

As usual bring a turning to the club meeting on the 13th. It can be a challenge piece , show and tell, a screw-up, or a piece just to show the club that you do have a lathe and turn.

We can all learn from each other and who we are today, and that's what we must accept, but that's not where you’re going to be a year from now, so let’s all grow together and help each other. If you want something critiqued, pleased see me and I will get someone to look at your work.

Susan is making name tags for each paid up member that we will pickup at the beginning of the meeting and turn in at the end of the meeting. Please wear your name tag during our meetings and welcome visitors and new members.

The next local event/show coming up is the Idaho State Fair. We have to tell the Fair by March 15th the slots we will fill for turning demonstrations. Please decide now so we can get with them before the last minute. The time to enter your turnings is set up for August 15th and 16th from 11am to 7 pm. Look up Idaho State Fair and go to Hobby craft section, then wood turning, for more info.

As briefly discussed last week we are in the process of organizing our DVD's and books to make them more available to the members for checkout and return. We need contributions of DVD's and books that you’re not using any more. Please return anything you have and are finished with. Normally one month should be sufficient time for check out.

Bring some wood for the wood raffle.
