Letters From the President

SOUTHWEST IDAHO WOODTURNERS ASSOCIATION
The Treasure Valley Woodturner's Club
Boise Idaho
July 17, 2012

Presidents Letter:

Trust you all liked Gary's demo this month. Gary has a special way of presenting his knowledge of turning and we all really appreciate what he does for our club.

Thanks for the show and tell pieces, they tell a lot about our club and how different levels of experience can be presented and appreciated. We are all on this journey in wood turning and at different stages of development. Where were at today is not where we will be tomorrow. Please don't wait to long to show the club where your at in your turning life. It's exciting for all of us to see what comes from your hands and mind.

Our challenge pieces have not had much competition lately, so change must be in order. For the month of September do anything from a 12 inch piece of 2x4. Lets see what we come up with. Those that don't bring something, be ready to tell why.

Our August meeting is going to be the picnic at Ron Lee's home. He located at five Mile and  Freeway 84 on the north side of the freeway.   660 S Five Mile. We will be combining the woodworkers and turners into one gathering.  Our main course is barbecue with side dishes furnished by club members.  If your last name starts with (A thru L) you should bring a salad type dish, if your last name ends in M thru Z you will bring a desert.  If your last name ends in A thru Z you bring a chair to sit in on a lawn type turf. If you chose a blanket that's your decision.

Important:   important:  important:

There’s going to be a croquet  contest at the picnic.

You are required to make a croquet mallet 9” long by 2 7/16” diameter.
Woodworkers  2 7/16 ' square.
Handle can be of any length and dia.
Turners must be round and wood workers must be square ( what else)
Decoration and creativity of mallet is encouraged.
$ 1.00 entry fee for all contestants and winner of best mallet will get 50% of purse and best croquet player will get 50% of purse.

We will have one judge from turners and one judge from woodworkers.

If there's a tie we will put two best in hat and draw winner.

Single wicket at different lengths will be competition.

You must use your own made mallet in competition. Spouses are encouraged to enter with  their mallet also.

2 min. practice time will be allowed

Those not competing will be noticed and may not get desert.

Lets have a good time with this.

Our September meeting  will be centered around demos of Christmas ornaments.

We want to do 3 or 4 demos and have a meeting. Please get with me if you would like demo a favorite ornament to the club.

October  9th meeting will be a  Sorby presentation on their latest products plus our regular meeting.

Nominating committee for officers for 2013 to be selected and/or announced.

October 19-20-21 will be a three day seminar by Kirk DeHeer at Woodcraft.

More info will be forth coming

November  13th will be John  Lee on his splendid work with segmented turning techniques and all the finery he brings to woodworking. (Don't miss this one)

Thanks again,

Frank
