COXA
Richard Bone

A sequel of sorts to the Bossa Nova flavoured Electropica album released a year or so back, Coxa (the Latin anatomical term for the hip joint - geddit?) finds NYC electronic composer Richard Bone foraging further into jazz styles of the '50s and '60s, paying homage this time to the cool sounds of artists and producers like Creed Taylor and vibesmen Cal Tjader and Dave Pike. On the eight listed tracks, the set exudes a soundtracky feel, evoking film- noir images of rain-slicked streets and smoky, neon-lit night spots. To give a more up-to-date perspective, comparisons to the downtempo sound of labels like Pork and Cup of Tea wouldn't be out of line. The disc is wrapped up with an unlisted piece that recalls Bone's more "traditional" ambient work with the sounds of lapping water and mellow melodies, but without disturbing the overall flow. Here's hoping that a third installment in this series is in the works.
