SERENE LIFE OF MICROBES
Richard Bone
Imagine yourself back on that stool in grade eleven biology class. The
teacher's snoozing in the back because he's put on a filmstrip about
microbes, and the soundtrack is calm and soothing. When I first saw
this CD, I'll admit - - I was worried. Who is Richard Bone, and who cares
about the life of microbes? Then I skimmed over the track listing."Protozoa, Mon Amour"? "The Seduction of Dr. Pasteur"?? I'm still not sure if these titles are supposed to be a joke (because as far as I can
tell they have nothing to do with the songs), but I did my best to put
them aside and judge the its own. All I can say is that I was
pleasantly surprised. AD Music categorizes Bone's music as "ambient electronic. . . that cleverly manages to be gentle, dark, beautiful and
strange," and that's exactly what it is. It's strange, but not intrusive - - the perfect soundtrack for snoozing at the back of class. (I
gave it only 3 stars, however, because I can't see many people playing
this CD in regular "listening to music" situations - - for example, have this on while driving at night and you'll likely feel like you're in a
scary movie or bad dream.)
